About Me
My name is Dr Jenna Mckeown. I am a registered Clinical Psychologist passionate about coming alongside people to help them overcome difficulties and work towards a rich, full and meaningful life.
My experience has taught me that the relationship between therapist and client is the most important part of the therapeutic process, and I always strive to ensure that the work we do takes place in the context of a meaningful connection. I am always keen to hear from people how they have come to this point in their lives, what helps them to thrive, and what keeps them stuck. Through this process, we can reach a shared understanding of the situation, and come up with a treatment plan together. I believe that the modern world often promotes a disconnect between our minds and our bodies, which is not a healthy way to live and can add to a sense of stuckness and disconnect. I seek to bring attention to mind, body, and emotions in my work, and to try and reintegrate these in order to generate a sense of wholeness.
Outside of work, I enjoy hill walking, baking, and musical theatre! My passions and interests help me connect and align with my body, mind, and feelings.
Why ‘Beehive Psychology’?
Good psychological therapy should always be a deeply collaborative process: you are bringing your expertise in your own life into the therapy room, and I am bringing experience and training as a Clinical Psychologist. In working together, we combine this experience and create something unique to the therapy space. The aim of this is to nourish and equip you to go out and live a life which is empowering and rich. Likewise, my work with communities, including faith settings, is a process rooted in collaboration and community.
I was drawn to the imagery of honey bees as a metaphor for therapy and training. Though operating independently, in bringing together their resources into the shared space of the hive, they are able to co-produce something nurturing and nourishing.
My training
I’m an HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with 16 years experience in mental health. I am trained to work with people of all ages who may be experiencing a wide range of problems with their mental health; since qualifying, I have worked predominantly with adults, in both the NHS and private sectors.
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Clinical Psychologist - number PYL31045
PsychD Clinical Psychology - University of Surrey
First Class BSc (Hons) in Psychology - University of Warwick
My HCPC registration requires me to regularly undertake additional training and learning.
Some of the extra training I have undertaken has been around Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is a ‘third wave’ form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which helps you focus on your values and what you want to stand for as a person; we then use this to help you learn to make choices which help you move towards these values, whilst practising acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings which may come up during the process.
I am EMDR trained and able to offer this in-person or online. EMDR is a therapy which was originally developed to help people with difficulties rooted in trauma. It involves using bilateral stimulation, such as repeated eye movements, to help the brain process old memories, so that they become less intense and have less of an impact on daily life and functioning.
I have also undertaken specialist training in an approach called Structured Clinical Management (SCM). SCM is an approach for people with complex needs and who may have a diagnosis of ‘Personality Disorder’; this approach involves structuring our work around the goals which you want to prioritise, and working in a very focused way on these.
